About The Steves

We have been together since 1998. We met in the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and had our first date on Christmas Eve that year. It was either irony or fate that brought us together with the same first name, same middle initial, and we were born the same year.

Our first wedding was our commitment ceremony in June 2000 in San Francisco. Although not legal in the traditional sense, it’s the date that we celebrate as our anniversary. We had another wedding in San Francisco City Hall in February 2004, when then-mayor Gavin Newsom invited same-sex couples to register and be married beginning on Valentine’s weekend, ignoring the current state law at the time. We got our 15 seconds of fame that day when we were filmed by a CNN camera crew and correspondent and featured on that day’s edition of Anderson Cooper, 360.

The third time is the charm, as they say. After the Supreme Court of the United States overturned California’s Proposition 8 in 2013, which banned same-sex marriages, we got married again at our church in Sacramento in a ceremony that we refer to as renewing our vows.

We both retired in 2020, and in 2022 we moved to Steve G’s hometown of Henderson, Kentucky, where we live in a beautiful ranch home on the banks of the Ohio River. We returned to our church in Evansville where we were members from 2004 to 2009, and we are actively involved in various community organizations. Steve W is working on his first novel (slowly) and hopes to have it done before the end of 2025.
